The Vox Concert Series is pleased to present an evening of rock with Static Cycle, Cary Judd & Michael Shynes as he plays an evening of acoustic/rock music at Wildwood Station in Wildwood Park on Friday, November 18, 2011. Tickets will be available at the door the evening of the show for $15 or $13 in advance online at http://voxconcertseries-staticcyclejuddshynes.eventbrite.com/  until end of day on Nov 17th.

Quickly melting that chilly imagery is rhythmic power alt-rock trio Static Cycle, who has been burning up the indie music scene in Anchorage, Alaska since 2007, rocking everything from local clubs to the Egan Convention Center. Over the past two years, the band has not only become the biggest band in Alaska, but also a nationally recognized act, touring 14 states in the U.S. (including dates in New York, Boston, Denver and L.A.) and sharing stages with major artists like Daughtry, Drowning Pool, Seether, Puddle of Mudd, Eve6, Emery and 36 Crazyfists. In late August, the band brought its explosive mix of rock, hip-hop, R&B, pop and world music to headline the Alaska State Fair, a 12-day event whose lineup included Collective Soul, Shinedown, Kenny Rogers, Lonestar and BoyzIIMen.  The sonically innovative sounds of Jared Navarre (vocals, guitar), Josh Witham (lead guitar) and Dennis Smith (drums) have been breaking the “static cycle” of mundane, cookie cutter indie rock. Yet the three, who are totally “in” on the goofy way people think about their home state, riff brilliantly off the cold imagery as they get set to release “Inside This World Of Mine,” the compelling, symphonic-rock driven debut single from their EP, Part 1: Hydrate.  The band shot the music video for the single in two very wintery locations, the first being a Ice Museum in Chena, Alaska, with additional footage shot on top of an actual ice glacier. Bristol Palin, “Dancing With The Stars” contestant and the daughter of former governor of Alaska and Vice President Candidate Sarah Palin, makes a cameo within the video portraying the role of “Mother Nature.” The video world-premiered on E! and has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, NY Daily News, Examiner, The Huffington Post and many Hollywood gossip outlets.

After receiving Performing Songwriter Magazine’s praise as “the perfect marriage between moxie and maturity,” the eclectic collection—whose debut single “Huang Shan (The Ah-ha Song)” received airplay on over 40 Triple AAA stations--was picked up for distribution by Sony Red and released in October, 2009. In January, 2010, Judd heads to Los Angeles to begin recording his follow-up EP with producers Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, Five For Fighting, One Republic, Augustana) and Andrew Williams (Five For Fighting, Alice Peacock, Jessica Simpson), with the ultimate intention of shopping this project to major labels. As he’s traveled across the U.S. playing up to 120 dates a year at colleges, house concerts and stadiums alike, the Southern California born and raised multi-talented performer has performed with or opened shows for Rocky Votolato, Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos, Joshua James, Tristan Prettyman, Pedro The Lion, Tyler Hilton, Raining Jane, and, as he likes to say, “many others that we’re sure you would be impressed with if he could just remember them!”

Judd first realized the vast appeal of his music to people of all ages when he started playing at a coffeehouse in his hometown of Thousand Oaks, California. In line after the show waiting to buy a CD and get his autograph were soccer moms, 15-year-old emo kids and 60 year old men—all of which help him debunk the stereotype that, despite his success on the college circuit, his brand of spirited yet lyrically rich songwriting is limited to a younger crowd. His song titles are as provocative as the album name. “The Apocalyptic Love Song” puts everything he could think of into a jangling, up-tempo pop song—his worldview of humans as a species, the repetition of history, the fallacy of our monetary system. The peppy pop-rocker “Angel with a Cigarette” is an exciting exercise in imagery-filled lyric writing about a character based on someone he knows.

So far, that unrelenting passion has enabled him to accomplish some truly noteworthy feats. In his brief tenure as a songwriter, Michael Shynes has performed on some of the most recognizable stages in the Midwest (The Excel Energy Center, The Taste of Minnesota Mainstage, Mississippi Music Fest, and The Varsity Theater to name a few). He has also shared the stage with countless National acts such as Eric Hutchinson, Tyler Hilton, and Soul Asylum. As for what the future holds for the gifted singer/songwriter, his outlook is simple. "Its not as much about looking ahead as it is about savoring every moment. If you're out there playing a show with your next show in mind, you are missing the opportunity to reach people." When I asked him how, he goes about reaching an audience, his answer was quite provocative. "You have to reach yourself first, and then assume that as humans we are all fighting the same battles." Shynes believes that if he is able to do that, that success ultimately follow. I will not be betting against it.
